We're PARRtial to PARR Lumber!

I like Parr lumber so much. Cause Marshall is a nice guy. Doug is too! Marshall and Doug are nice. They have a whole bunch of people there. And Shauna. They sell saws and all that. We had hot dogs there. Sausages. Two cricket hotdogs! We walked around.[breaks into the song he sang at the kareoke] "Bye Bye miss American pie, drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry. the good ol' boys who drink whiskey and rye say this will be the day that I die this will be the day that I die." Guess what I saw all that wood that say there like that [motions hand against the ceiling] how come? I go to Parr everyday. Guess what? I go down there on Saturdays and have an egg salad sandwich.
-Steven
We are so thankful for Parr Lumber for being such great friends with all of us. We had a phenomenal time at the Parr-BQ.

We did an exciting thing! [field trip review]

Project Grow visited EcoSpeed, the world's best electric assist! Thanks to Lisa Bleier, our good friend, for arranging this wonderfully informative experience.

Zach:
I had a good time enjoying the ladies and guys talk about the electric bikes and how they work.
Dan: yea. And asking them questions.
Zach: I learned that I liked the different people that were talking about the bikes.
Kelly: It was fascinating! I liked the bikes the bikes that they showed off. They got a lot of skillz!
Dan: How they put them together and stuff, the gears and everything.
Zach: Someone rode the bike down the street. I may get a bike again!
Dan: I asked what I could do to do it to my bike and he said it costs 2500 dollars to put a motor on my bike.
Zach: That's a lot of money.
Dan: I can save up the money.
Endale: I liked the trick bike!
Dan: I liked it when they rode around the parking lot.
Maurice: I liked the bikes turning into motor bikes!
Dan: They are nice people. Lisa is a nice person. She also said, thank you very much for setting it up with her. That's what she said. Thank you for showing us around. Those things aren't even loud! They are quiet. I liked it when they turned on the throttle, the electric starter. I liked those. And the one she showed to us was a neat one.

We like Mud.

John:

Oh we picked different fruit berries. Different berries, plants that taste like boysenberry. We hiked up to a castle. It was fine. [To Tim] What kind of forest is that?

Tim: That is temperate rainforest.

Then we hiked back down And, I got my energy metabolism worked up.

Zach:

I enjoyed the hike today too.

I liked looking at the scenery. The plants. And tasting the bay leaf? [To Tim]What was that leaf that I tried today?

I liked the miner’s lettuce that was good.

Drawing our own donuts.. and eating it too!

The first thing we did is, the bikes left and the guys on it took off. We left after second break and we took the bus down to VooDoo donuts, we met Jim and James and Steven and Dan and Forrest at the Donut Shop. When we got there, we walked through the back off the kitchen. We had a tour. And we talked about the donuts and how they make them and how they fry them and then the tour is over and we went to the front. We had our donuts. Then we did some art work drawing donuts, then that was it. We designed our own donuts so we could figure out how its done, to do something different. I felt good that we all came as a group and had a good time.

The bread tasted good!

We went to Franz Bakery. Over by, not far from the Lloyd Center. We went up and down on big elevator. When we went upstairs they had oily floors. We learned how dough was made and how the bread went into the oven, we saw them on the conveyor belt on the ceiling. And another thing we had to wear, we had to wear head nets, beard nets. I took my watch off and everything.

The tour guide was real nice. After we had a whole tour they gave us a bag of stuff to bring back. I got bread and cookies. I ate the bread for lunch. It was really good. Cookie, a chocolate chip and raising cookie. Also, after we were done there we took our head nets off. We came back just in time for lunch! - Zach M.

I went to school, junior high and I got hang of it, reading and everything. And I now want a chance on contract and stuff, so I can get a hang of it. I was told, I don't see why not.

But about today, I thought it was neat. I liked everything about the tour! I know how to bake now! Becky was terrific. She is nice and so were the guys. They said, yes ma'm and no ma'm, I like that. I like that I could do things. Franz is a great bakery everyone should buy bread and rolls from!- Patsy B.

We, at Project Grow, are very thankful for the gracious, exciting, and inspiring tour we received from Becky at Franz Bakery! What a great, sustainably minded company. Thank you so much to everyone we met at Franz.

Hollywood Theater

Justen from Hollywood theater welcomed the Project Grow artists and farmers with open arms on our field trip. He revealed the 90 year old secrets behind those beautiful red curtains and invited us into the projection booth.  We all came back to the Project Grow space feeling inspired and energized!

There was a stage, where Michael Jackson and the Jackson five can sing! I like the movies! I'd like to go with Mom and Dad. Movies are good, I like to see them. The rock is kicking! That's from a movie. - Jamond W.

Thanks to Justen and the Hollywood theater for the warm welcome.  What an amazing Portland landmark.  Thank you.

They taste like sweet flowers

All smiles after a tour at Sweet Masterpiece in northwest Portland. Some of our artists couldn't stop raving about the experience.

Tastes good.
I never seen one like
The crumbs of chocolate taste good.
The coffee seems good.
-John

I like the taste of the chocolate of the truffles.
They're sweet, they were great.
That taste like sweet flowers.
And also like the taste of the truffle.
I like the big machines.
The crumbs were good and they taste really good.

Hotlips Pizza in SE Portland - A Review

After a fantastic and welcoming trip to Hotlips Pizza in SE Portland, we decided to write a review on their product and services.

John Mosser:
It tasted good and I especially liked it because it had lots of spices in it. The people who worked there were very nice. The dough was excellent. The sauce and the cheese tasted very good. I learned how to make pizza on this trip.

Zach Marzolf:
I liked the way they cooked the pizza and put the topping on. I had a good time going into the area where they made the potatoes and vegetables and all that. I liked the way Lou made the pizza and gave us some blackberry soda. The soda was also good. I would recommend someone to go there and I would like to take my mom or my roommate, who would also love it.

Zenger Farm Tomorrow

We have had three fabulous field trips in February. I can't wait to see what is in store for the gang in Project Grow in March. It is starting out with quite a bang. Tomorrow we are going to Zenger Farm where we are going to have a little bit of a tour, a little bit of a lesson on farm safety, and the chance to meet the folks who do so such wonderful work in the community.

It is also a perfect time to reflect on our own little adventure that is shaping up behind Port City, an organic urban farm of our own!
